Matthew Spencer was born at Rouchel in 1843.
Matthew was one of the four Spencer Brothers who initially purchased Cuttabunda in 1870 and one of the earliest references to him was a newspaper report that he was seriously injured in an accident at Cuttabunda in 1874.
In a letter of 1882 his sister in law Rebecca Spencer comments “I suppose you was a little surprised to hear that Matt had really taken a wife. He was such a long time thinking about it.” Matthew married Emma Walker in 1882 aged 39.
Emma Walker was a Rouchel girl and they initially lived at Rouchel Vale.
They moved permanently to Cuttabunda in 1892 or 1893. Like his brother John Matthew and Emma lived for some time in Brewarrina, after the failure of Cuttabunda, before settling in Aberdeen. Matthew died in Muswellbrook in 1910.
Matthew and Emma had eight children.
