Smiling Emma Finishes 6th
As Emma Moffat ran into the finish line after nearly two hours of swim (1.5km), Bike(40km) and run 10km she had a beaming smile. In a post match interview she said for the last half kilometer she could not keep the smile off her face. She was so pleased to be competing at her third olympics.
In the lead pack for much of the race she just wasn’t quite quick enough to go with them at the end and she crossed the line 1hr:57min:55secs, less than a minute behind the bronze medalist and 99 seconds behind USA’s gold medallist Gwen Jorgensen.
It was a positive way for Emma to end her Olympic career having originally thought she would retire after the London Games in 2012.
“Coming away with sixth place is probably more than I expected so yeah I’m really happy."
“I knew it was going to be a hard race but I didn’t really expect to go that well – there’s a lot of quality athletes that get on the start line so yeah I’m really happy with how I went.”
Moffatt and London bronze medallist Erin Densham were in the lead pack from the opening swim leg with Erin finishing 12th. Fellow Australian Ashleigh Gentle was caught more than 30 seconds behind, out of the swim leg and from there she could could catch the lead group and finished in 26th place.
